Getting Involved with Dulcimers

Lois’s Story
To quote from one of my favorite songs, “My life has been a
pleasure.” Charles and I have always mixed music and camping
together. We spent many years traveling with friends to music festivals. I
would usually play cards or other games with the ladies while the guys
would jam around a campfire. We managed to do this while working and
raising a child. I spent 33 years at Coastal Welding Supply in the office, and
Charles was a fire fighter for the city of Beaumont for 32 years.
We’ve been deeply involved in other interests and hobbies while raising
our daughter but always seemed to gravitate back to music. Charles tried
for years to get me to play an instrument and read music, but it didn’t hold
my interest. You only need one musician in the family.
The first couple of times we met with dulcimer “Friends” I brought my
crochet. It wasn’t long before my fingers started itching, and I was asking
Charles questions. It didn’t take too much encouragement to get me to drag
out a guitar. We owned various instruments including a dulcimer, autoharp,
a stand-up bass and several guitars, but I was never serious about more
than a few strums or licks on the strings.
What changed? I wanted to be a part of the fun this group was
having. This was a good decision on my part. My life is blessed with good
friends, a loving family and an awesome God.
